All employers (property owners or occupiers) in general industry and construction must provide for the safe evacuation of all employees from the workplace (29 CFR 1910.34 and 29 CFR 1926.34). Though written evacuation plans are not federally mandated for all workplaces, most employers choose to have them to meet the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) general duty requirement to provide a workplace “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.…”
